Measure natural ice before stepping onto it; avoid river ice and fishing holes
A supervised rink costs little extra. Natural ice requires measuring equipment, rescue picks, and repeated checks.
Official guidance sets minimum thickness thresholds, but ice can vary sharply across a small area. White ice is weaker than clear new ice, and river currents and fishing holes add hazards.

The excuse
One more exception feels free because the bill arrives outside the current scene.
What feels good now
Today I keep a little money, a few minutes and avoid interrupting my default routine.
What the source says
The source summarizes the return this way: “Official guidance sets minimum thickness thresholds, but ice can vary sharply across a small area. White ice is weaker than clear new ice, and river currents and fishing holes add hazards.” Evidence grade C. The original states the population, caveats, and sources; this is not a personal forecast.

THE ENGLISH EDITION
Original recommendation and evidence
41. Measure natural ice before stepping onto it; avoid river ice and fishing holes
Cost: A supervised rink costs little extra. Natural ice requires measuring equipment, rescue picks, and repeated checks.
In plain terms: Official guidance sets minimum thickness thresholds, but ice can vary sharply across a small area. White ice is weaker than clear new ice, and river currents and fishing holes add hazards.
Applicability and limits: Thickness thresholds are not guarantees of safety. The original source includes cold-water rescue guidance and directs bystanders to the emergency chapter.
